Disciplinary Culture in Tertiary Institutions
It is indisputable that civilization has eroded the conventional structure of various tertiary institutions in Nigeria leading to high level of indiscipline among students in tertiary institutions in the new millennium era.
According to Encarta dictionary the word Disciplinary is defined as relating to enforcement and punishment: relating to the enforcement and punishment of rules of behavior.

Gone are the days when disciplinary cultures were instilled in our tertiary institutions then, students adhered to institutions’ established rules and regulations. Although, that does not imply that all tertiary institutions in this new age are deficient in disciplinary culture, but to a very large extent, many tertiary institutions both public and private lack disciplinary culture.
Meanwhile, looking at the intensity of disciplinary culture in tertiary institutions from a retrospective angle, our tertiary institutions emphatically speaking, lack disciplinary culture. Justify this assertion, below are some of the reasons for the negligence of disciplinary culture in tertiary institutions.
Let us examine the privately owned tertiary institutions for instance, what do you expect of an institution which is private? Where the students could obviously use money to manipulate their ways through, the disciplinary level in these institutions’ is barely minimal because they pay so much and would be considered.
Also, the ‘man know man’’ syndrome of admitting students into tertiary institutions i.e. the process of not going through due process of admitting prospective students into tertiary Institutions. Is also major factor responsible for moral decadence in tertiary institutions, for that reason a student whom all the admission processes was manipulated will never appreciate the University and would apparently do things with levity and impunity believing that nobody would question or challenge him.
In addition, some lectures in our tertiary institutions had compromised their integrity through illicit secret affairs with some of their students which in the long run make students treat them with disdain. these students often do whatever they wishes knowing fully well that no one can question them because of the love affairs they are having with lectures and believing that they cannot fail even they didn’t attended lectures; causes all these cause deficiencies in disciplinary culture in our tertiary institutions .
One would agree that the ineffectiveness of disciplinary culture in our various tertiary institutions is the product of incessant Cultism in tertiary institutions and the likes. However, investigations over time has disclosed that most of these cultism activities in various institutions are backed and sponsored by some faceless people within the confines of the institutions this situation is an affirmation to the popular saying that ‘‘a dog cannot just be dancing if its drummer is not hidden somewhere’’.
Meanwhile, educational centers should in its entirety fulfill the objectives stated by David Beresford an education scholar when he posited that’’ school must be a shire of knowledge, a means of existence, a studio of creativity and an academy for discipline. ’’But it is pathetic to note that the education available to most Nigerians is devoid of these ebullience and substance because both the educators and the learning materials are defective and substantially inadequate. The education has lost its grip, focus, objective intent and purpose and it has been succeeding in producing certificate carriers, half – baked products, most of whom cannot differentiate between what is worth reading and sheer stupidity.
At this junction, one would draw the conclusion that disciplinary culture in our tertiary institution is moribund, but that does not depict that there is no disciplinary culture in tertiary institutions, but to a large extent its not effective enough and for these reason authorities of various tertiary institutions should endeavor to rein state disciplinary culture in the institutions in other to restore moral and academics sanity into the educational sector.
